regarding the 5 free signal you get before having to pay to host a C2 system, are these 1) 5 open-close round trips, or 2) 5 signals of any type (e.g. close all positions)

It is five signal entries – meaning you can press SUBMIT five times on the order-entry ticket. It does not matter whether signal gets executed or not.
The purpose here is not to provide a rich and immersive free demo experience for long periods of time, but rather to let you see how signal entry works and to make sure you are comfortable that you can do what you want to be able to do before we ask you to commit to a system and put some skin in the game.
So does it also mean 5 order entry API calls, no matter what the content?
No, not any API calls – just new signal entries.
