There is a substantial risk of loss in trading. You should therefore carefully consider
whether such trading is suitable for you in light of your financial condition. You should read,
understand, and consider the Risk Disclosure Statement that is provided by your broker
before you consider trading. Most people who trade lose money.
Interactive Brokers is now using a combination of rules based and risk based margin requirements for volatility products. The last rules based numbers I got from them a couple weeks ago was: 80% for Long SVXY/XIV and 180% for Short UVXY/TVIX; but they may have changed since then.
I checked my account with only XIV shares. Apparently the margin for XIV these days is 100%. It’s really crazy considering that before with portfolio margin you only needed around 35% margin for XIV.
Thanks for taking the time to reply. Since I don’t have an account at IB, it is somewhat difficult to determine what IB’s margin requirements are currently.
A good reason to go TOS sometime in the future . . . ,
